VOLUNTEERING
Highland
Creek Elementary volunteer opportunities are listed below. If you
are interested in any of these opportunities print and fill out
the Volunteer
Sign Up form and return it to your child's teacher.
There is also a Volunteer
Management System that will perform a background check on everyone
daily. All volunteers will need to register on this system (As
of January 2008, this is a new system, if you are already a volunteer,
you must re-register.). CMS is now paying for background
checks with money earned through a partnership with another company.
Please contact volunteers@hcepta.org
if you have any questions.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading management program
designed to motivate students to read while increasing their reading
ability. Our AR Program is in the development stage. Volunteers
are needed to serve on a committee to help in that effort.
Beautification – Grounds
This committee will plan and facilitate outdoor beautification projects
on the school campus, as well as maintain basic landscaping and
care of the school grounds.
Book Fairs
The Book Fair Committee oversees Highland Creek's two annual book
fairs; the fall book fair is October 16-20 and the spring book fair
is April 30-May 4. The day the book fair inventory is delivered
to the school, volunteers are needed to set up the books: Fri.,
Oct. 13th and Fri., April 27th. Volunteers are also needed daily
to act as cashiers during the school day and at the two Family Pizza
Nights, which are planned for Mon., Oct. 16th and Mon., April 30th.
There are no set times for when you volunteer, it is simply what
your schedule will allow. When the book fair is over, volunteers
will pack up the unsold books.
Family Focus
This fun and very busy committee plans many of the school family
events including Autumn Fest, Family Pizza Night(s), Muffins for
Moms, Donuts for Dads, Father/Daughter Dance and a Mother/Son event.
Numerous volunteers are needed to work at several of these events.
Time commitment is the duration of the specific event volunteered
for (or for some events, a “shift”). Great volunteer
opportunities for working parents since most of these events take
place in the evening!
Health Room
Parent volunteers are needed in the health room to take temperatures,
bandage cuts/scrapes and call parents to pick up children. The time
commitment is simply what your schedule will allow. Also needed
are volunteers for school-wide health screening, vision tests and
finger printing, which is a three-day process.
Media Center
Volunteers are needed daily to assist Ms. Walser, the Media Specialist,
with the needs of the media center: shelf books, check in new materials
& periodicals, teach “book-care” to students, etc.
(Although we all love our preschoolers, this is one volunteer duty
they are not permitted to help with.)
Reception
This committee coordinates refreshments for school receptions and
for PTA board meetings. In addition, a volunteer is needed once
a month to help serve birthday cake to students during the lunch
hour (11:00 – 1:00). You are not responsible for helping with
every function.
Retail Incentives (Box Tops,
Soup Labels, Etc.)
The responsibilities of this committee is to collect, tally, and
convert collected labels into funds so that additional educational
materials can be purchased for the school. Volunteers are needed
to collect and trim tops and labels as they are sent in from the
children; this task can easily be done from home.
Staff Appreciation
If you enjoy baking and/or cooking, please consider volunteering
for the Staff Appreciation Committee. Throughout the year, we are
responsible for providing refreshments for two teacher/staff functions:
the Cookie Walk in December and the Staff Appreciation Luncheon
in May. Volunteers are needed to help bake/cook refreshments, to
set up for the events and to clean up after.
Yearbook
We need parents to take pictures and assemble class pages on-line.
Ideally (but not absolutely necessary), these volunteers will own
digital cameras and have high-speed internet access. We also need
volunteers to assist with picture day.
"Worker Bee" Volunteer
This is for the volunteer that would like to do a little bit of
everything.
"After Hours" Volunteer
This volunteer opportunity allows working and/or “at-home”
parents with little ones to be involved in PTA events that occur
outside of school hours. Examples of events volunteers would be
needed for include Book Fair, Father/Daughter Dance, and Spring
Jam.
